As Blake lay in the dark on the honeymoon suite’s fold-out sofa, he knew he’d handled everything wrong. He didn’t know what he could have done differently, but obviously Jenna was upset, and he felt raw. He supposed this wedding today wasn’t much different than his would have been nineteen years ago if he and Danielle had managed to elope. Except then it would have been exciting, a lark, a beginning. Preston Howard had squelched their future when he’d had Blake pulled in for kidnapping. Howard had had contacts in the police department and the charge had been meant to scare Blake away from Danielle for good. Although Danielle’s father later had the arrest warrant dropped, Blake hadn’t even thought of going near a wedding chapel since then.

After he plumped his pillow for the third time, he wished he could read Jenna’s mind. She’d been so quiet after the wedding. Although she’d tried to make conversation throughout dinner, he could see it was an effort. Marrying him had been more difficult for her than she’d imagined, he guessed. He remembered the emotion in her eyes when she’d removed her plain gold wedding band.

A thought suddenly struck him as he thought of the old adage that history repeated itself. Jenna’s father didn’t approve of him, either. Batting two for two.

Trying to relax every muscle in his body took concentration, especially when Jenna was less than thirty feet away in a white cotton nightgown. He’d gone for a walk so she could comfortably get herself ready for bed. Yet when he’d returned, he’d seen the fabric against her creamy skin and noticed the little pink roses across the bodice as she’d read in bed. At least that’s what she’d pretended to do. He hadn’t seen her turn one page.

Now he heard her stirring and he realized she couldn’t sleep, either. A few moments later, he heard her sheet rustle, then she found her robe and crossed to the balcony door. Opening it quietly, she stepped outside.

With a groan of frustration and exasperation, he sat up, then followed Jenna to the balcony. When he joined her, she was standing at the white railing, looking down over the pool.

“Jenna?” he asked cautiously.

Turning, she faced him. “I couldn’t sleep.”

Her hair soft and falling around her face, she looked like an angel standing there in white. Desire kick-started and he reminded himself he was only out here to find out what she was thinking. “What’s wrong? You’re obviously upset.”

She looked surprised, as if she thought she’d been doing an excellent job of hiding it. “I’m sorry.”

“There’s nothing to be sorry about. This is awkward for both of us.” He’d never really cared what anybody else thought before, but now he wanted to know what was on Jenna’s mind.

“Yes, it is,” she admitted. “I’m not used to wearing a nightgown in front of a practical stranger.” She fingered her wedding band. “And the wedding today…”

“What about the wedding?” he asked gruffly.

“I guess it’s just the temporary feel
